Welcome to the Dr Green Fingers series, brought to you by Plants by Post. This blog series aims to help you diagnose common plant problems and offer helpful solutions and advice, starting with indoor plants. You’re welcome!

Find help and information on common indoor plant problems and issues here and plenty more advice to ensure you have the greenest, healthiest plants possible.

5 Common Indoor Plant Care Problems

You may have heard the theories that talking to your plants can help keep them healthy? Well, you might not believe this to be true, but we can’t deny that our plants do talk to us…in a sense. When there is a problem with your plant, they will communicate this to you through various signs. If you’re unsure how to speak this unique language with your plants, don’t worry, you will find all the answers you need here.

We have pulled together the five most common indoor plant care problems so that you can quickly find the issue with your plant and diagnose it accurately. Once you have found what you suspect to be the issue with your house plant, follow our solution advice to get back on track to thrive.

1. Yellowing Leaves On Indoor Plants

If you notice the leaves of your plant are yellowing, don’t automatically think the worst. This could just be a natural progression of your plant’s lifecycle. If the leaves are older, they will turn yellow and naturally drop off. However, if you notice a large number of the leaves are yellowing, this could signify a much bigger problem.

A common cause of leaves turning yellow is too much shade for your plant, which we understand can be tricky to get right when your plants are inside. But simply moving plants with yellowing leaves closer to the window can ensure they get all the sunlight they need. If this isn’t possible in your space, you may want to consider choosing plants that thrive in low-light levels instead. You could look into a few examples here: spider plants, monstera plants and peace lilies

2. Dropping Leaves

Have you noticed the leaves on your indoor plant dropping more frequently? This could mean you have been either over watering or under watering your plant.

When there is insufficient water in your soil, your plant will struggle to accumulate the nutrients it needs to photosynthesise. To check if your plants are under watered, press your finger several centimetres deep into the soil, and if it's bone dry, then it's time to water!

dropping leaves

If your soil feels full of moisture, you need to check the roots of your plants. A sign of over watering is visible with waterlogged roots that may appear brown and mushy. For reference, healthy roots should look firm and white.

To correct over watering or under watering, you could try a gardening tool such as a self-watering planter to ensure a steady and regular watering schedule for your plant.

3. Curling Leaves

Curling leaves on your house plant are a sign of too little water and too much humidity. They curl in an effort to try and conserve water and protect themselves.

Use the trick we mentioned earlier to check the soil moisture levels beneath the surface and determine if your plant is in desperate need of a drink. Just be sure not to overcorrect the issue and water the plant too much. Instead, water the plant with the usual amount you would give it. When this has settled, mist the leaves regularly to keep them hydrated.

Your plant may also suffer from too much humidity and heat in your home, causing the leaves to curl. This is due to your plant being close to heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces. Simply moving them away from these into a different room in your home can fix the issue.

4. Brown Leaves

Brown leaves, sometimes referred to as burnt leaves, are simple to diagnose. Just like we get burnt when we’re out in the sun too long, the same thing can happen to your house plants if they get too much direct sunlight.

Brown colour and crisping edges are clear to spot when checking up on your indoor plants, and some plants are more prone to it than others, like tropical foliage. To remedy this, you should try moving your houseplants from their usual perch near the window during the early afternoon when the sun is at its highest. This ensures your plants get a good mix of sunlight and shade time if they suffer from burns.

Another culprit for brown leaves is over-fertilising, which may not seem bad on paper. But you can ensure you’re taking proper care of your plants by simply following the basic instructions on the basics of fertilising your plants.

5. Lopsided and Sparse Growth

This issue might be more superficial and appearance-based than others on our list. Still, it remains that a plant that is growing lopsided or sparsely is not easy to miss.

You might want to take action on this issue if you have noticed one side of your plant growing taller and thriving more than the other or have spotted sparse spots in your pot. Luckily, fixing lopsided and sparse growth is pretty straightforward. The problem is your plant is not getting long enough sun exposure to each side equally.

Try rotating your plants a little bit each time you water them to fix this issue!

How To Get Optimal Growth From Your Plants

To ensure optimal growth for your plants, consider the specific watering needs of different types of plants. For example, container plants require more frequent watering than those planted in the ground because their roots are confined and can't search for moisture. It's important to water the roots directly rather than just the foliage, as this helps prevent diseases and ensures the water reaches the plants' roots where it's needed most.

mulching

Additionally, using mulch around your plants can help retain moisture in the soil, reducing the need for frequent watering and protecting the roots during hot weather. For more detailed advice, consider installing an automatic irrigation system, which can be particularly beneficial for maintaining a consistent watering schedule and conserving water. Plant Growing Tips For Garden in Dry Weather Conditions

Plant growing tips are an essential guide, as gardening enthusiasts, we eagerly await the vibrant summer months when our English gardens come alive. Whether we spend our days nurturing plants or simply enjoy the outdoors with a refreshing drink, summer is the perfect time for gardening. However, hot temperatures and limited rainfall pose new challenges for gardeners in maintaining thriving green spaces. In this blog post, Dr Green Fingers is here to help. At Plants By Post, we have compiled common problems faced by gardeners in hot, dry conditions, also known as weather damage and provided effective solutions. Let's explore how to combat these challenges and keep our gardens flourishing.

Understanding the Challenges of Hot Weather and Gardening:

Soil Drying Out:

In scorching temperatures, soil moisture evaporates rapidly, leaving plants vulnerable to dehydration. Dry soil negatively affects plant growth, flowering, and overall health.

Water Scarcity:

Limited rainfall makes it difficult to maintain proper hydration for gardens and allotments. Traditional watering methods may not be sustainable, particularly in regions experiencing water scarcity.

Practical Steps to Combat Hot, Dry Conditions:

a landscape blighted by drought

Water Conservation Techniques:

To minimize water usage while ensuring plants receive adequate hydration, consider implementing the following techniques:

Mulching: Apply organic mulch to reduce evaporation, retain moisture, and regulate soil temperature.

Drip Irrigation: Install a drip irrigation system to deliver water directly to plant roots, minimizing waste through evaporation and runoff.

drip irrigation in a garden

Rainwater Harvesting: Collect rainwater using barrels or tanks connected to gutters, providing a sustainable water source during dry spells.

Proper Watering Practices:

To optimize water usage, follow these watering techniques:

Watering Deeply: Soak the soil deeply to encourage deeper root growth, increasing plants' resilience to drought.

Watering Times: Water plants during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening, to minimize evaporation.

Choosing Drought-Tolerant Plants:

Selecting plants naturally adapted to arid conditions significantly reduces water requirements. Consider including succulents, xerophytes, and native species in your garden or allotment.

Improving Soil Health:

Healthy soil retains moisture better and supports plant growth.  For the best results, take the following measures:

Organic Matter: Enhance soil structure and water-holding capacity by adding compost or well-rotted manure.

Mulching: Apply mulch to regulate soil temperature and reduce moisture loss.

Conclusion:

While hot, dry conditions present challenges for gardeners and allotment owners, we have the opportunity to adapt and employ sustainable water techniques. By conserving water, selecting appropriate plants, trees and shrubs, and improving soil health, we can create resilient and thriving gardens even in the face of climatic changes. Remember to stay informed, innovative, and let your green thumb flourish with the help of Dr Green Fingers.

Gardening For Mental Health - Why Does It Help?
physical movement whilst gardening

As we try to pivot towards healthier lifestyles, one timeless activity stands out for its unparalleled benefits to our mind and body—gardening. In line with Mental Health Awareness Week 2024, which emphasizes "Movement: Moving for Your Mental Health," this blog explores how the physical activity involved in gardening can be a powerful tool for enhancing mental health. Whether tending to seedlings on balconies and windowsills or nurturing an expansive back garden, discover how gardening can improve your mental and physical well-being.

Why Gardening For Mental Health Is Good For You

Embrace your outside spaces as a gateway to better health. Gardening offers a unique blend of joys and benefits, serving as both solace and physical exercise. It connects us to nature and is profoundly fulfilling, aligning perfectly with this year's Mental Health Awareness Week theme.  Research demonstrates how physical movement through gardening activities can help manage stress, elevate mood and focus the brain.

planting in troughs

In 2021, research published by the RHS demonstrated that daily gardeners report well being scores that are 6.6% higher and stress levels that are 4.2% lower compared to those who do not engage in gardening. This study, which surveyed over 6,000 individuals, found a clear link between frequent gardening and notable improvements in well being, reduced stress, and increased physical activity.

The Therapeutic Powers of Gardening

The garden is a therapist and a sanctuary. Immersing yourself in gardening activities can lead to significant reductions in stress and anxiety. This is achieved through the sensory experience of handling soil, the sounds of nature, and the visual appeal of green spaces, which are known to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Moreover, gardening requires focus and attention, channeling your energies into productive tasks that yield visible rewards, reinforcing a sense of accomplishment and control.

Physical Health Benefits Of Gardening

Gardening is surprisingly physical. It combines strength, endurance, dexterity, and flexibility, engaging different muscle groups. Regular gardening can contribute to maintaining healthy bones, muscles, and joints. Additionally, activities such as digging, planting, weeding, and pruning are excellent forms of low-impact exercise, suitable for all ages and abilities. It's also an engaging way to boost your exposure to vitamin D when gardening outdoors, which is vital for bone health and immune function.

Gardening for Everyone

a Balcony with plants on it

No garden? No problem! Gardening can be adapted to suit any living situation. For urban dwellers, container gardens or vertical plantings make excellent use of limited space. At Plants by Post, we offer a variety of container-friendly plants that thrive indoors or on balconies, making gardening accessible to everyone. Whether you’re looking to start with easy-care herbs or vibrant flowers, our selection is tailored to fit your space and lifestyle.

By choosing native plants, avoiding pesticides, and using organic methods, you contribute to a healthier ecosystem. These practices ensure that your gardening not only supports local wildlife but also reduces your chemical exposure, promoting a safer and more natural environment around your home.

As we endure the cold winter months, we and our gardens eagerly await the first signs of spring. At Plants by Post, we're excited to introduce you to the delicate beauty of snowdrop flowers, the plant harbingers of spring. Often, you might catch your first glimpse of snowdrops in the garden or in the wild as the blanket of winter snow starts to melt. In its wake, the persistent and beautiful sight of snowdrop plants standing proud to give us a second snowfall to welcome.

Welcome to our guide to snowdrop planters! Here you can find information on this gorgeous plant and advice on how to best care for them.

What are Snowdrop Flowers?

snowdrops

The snowdrop is a flowering plant with the scientific name of Galanthus Nivalis. It stands at around 7-15cm tall and looks ethereal with a minimal number of smooth, narrow leaves that are a frosty grey-green colour.

The flower itself is made up of six segments, known as tepals, and is a part of the Amaryllidaceae family. They are commonly found in woodland and grassland areas, including parks and gardens.

When Do Snowdrops Flower?

Typically, snowdrops flower between January and April, so we look forward to these beautiful buds transitioning us into spring.

Often, you might catch your first glimpse of snowdrops in the wild as the blanket of winter snow starts to melt. In its wake, the persistent and beautiful sight of snowdrop plants standing proud to give us a second snowfall to welcome.

When Should I Plant Snowdrops?

Typically, snowdrops flower between January and April, so we can look forward to these beautiful buds transitioning us into spring.  You will start to see them coming up in gardens and the countryside now. So anytime between these dates is good, though to get the most out of your Snowdrop Flowers, the earlier they are planted the better!

Where Should I Plant Snowdrops?

If you’re transferring a snowdrop plant to your garden, you should make sure to do so in an area with shade patches. The soil should also be hummus-rich and moist in order for it to thrive.

How Long Does it Take a Snowdrop to Grow?

Suppose you’re trying to decide between buying Snowdrop plants or growing them yourself. In that case, the answer to this question might help your decision.

It will take a snowdrop plant seven years from a seedling to reach the flowering stage. This is a long time to wait if you’re hoping to fill your garden with this gorgeous plant this winter season. So, in that instance, many people prefer buying a snowdrop planter or a potted snowdrop buds to give themselves a head start and receive the benefits of the snowdrop flowers.

Snowdrops In The Green

It is widely believed that the best results for snowdrop flowers are to plant snowdrops in the green, rather than dry bulbs in the autumn.  Dry bulbs planted in the autumn often fail, as they dry out too much during the winter and seeds can take too long.  Planting snowdrop flowers that are already established with shoots and ‘in the green’, allows the plants to flourish straight away.

snowdrops in field

To achieve optimal growth, If planting to your garden, it's recommended to transplant your snowdrops immediately after dividing them. This helps avoid any drying out of the plants. When replanting, ensure they are placed deep into damp soil and water them consistently for the following weeks. This practice will aid in the swift re-establishment of the roots.

Easy Care for Beginners: No Pruning Necessary

Snowdrops are wonderfully low-maintenance, ideal for novice gardeners. They require minimal care and no pruning, making them a fuss-free addition to any garden.

What Do I Do with Snowdrops After Flowering?

Are you growing your own snowdrop plants and wondering what to do once they begin to flower? This is the sign that they are ready to be potted!

snowdrops in woodland

Once your snowdrops begin to flower and before the foliage turns yellow, gently lift them from the soil and plant them in your pot at the same soil level. If you think the soil in your pot may be heavy, we recommend adding a little sand or grit in order to improve drainage.

Finally, water them thoroughly and allow the foliage to die off naturally.

Why Didn't My Snowdrops Flower?

Are your snowdrops not flowering as you believe they should be? This is a sign that they might be congested. Just like we all feel a little stuffed up in winter, your snowdrops can feel the same!

snowdrop splitting up for planting

This just means that too many bulbs are trying to flower in the same planter, so if they’re not flowering, this is your cue to split them up. Simply lift your snowdrops from the soil, divide the clump and re-pot in soil rich with compost.

How Should I Cut Snowdrop Flowers?

When your snowdrops have grown tall and flowered beautifully, you can share them with your friends and family. Snowdrops look beautiful in a bouquet and are a perfect way to cheer up your loved ones in the miserable month of January.

Plus, you might also need to make room for the new stems beginning to grow!

snowdrop cutting to put in a pot

So, if you’re ready to cut your snowdrop flowers, you should make sure to pick the long stems and sear the stem end in boiling water. You should do this for just ten seconds and then put them into deep, cold water to extend their vase life.

Do Snowdrop Flowers Need Pruning?

When it comes to flower keeping, you might often hear the term pruning. It seems a lot of plants need to be pruned in order for them to flourish.

However, when it comes to snowdrop flowers, this is not the case! You can simply let the foliage of your snowdrop plants die and fall away naturally with no damage or quality caused to the flower itself. This makes keeping snowdrops a lot simpler and ideal for beginners.

Choosing the Perfect Winter Plant

We hope our guide to snowdrop flowers has given you the information you need to keep and grow these flourishing flowering plants.

Poinsettia Plants

Native to Mexico, Poinsettia plants have become a staple feature of festive decorations in the UK. Although they are a favourite amongst plant lovers at Christmas, they aren’t exactly easy to care for. Poinsettias can be tricky plants to master. They are notoriously fussy and sensitive to temperature changes, so most people rarely survive past January. Thankfully, there are specific things you can do to ensure your Poinsettia plant lives to see another Christmas. Here is everything you need to know about caring for your Poinsettia throughout the festive season and all year round.

Why Poinsettia Plants Are Popular At Christmas

It is currently estimated that over 2 million Poinsettias are sold every year, just in time for Christmas. Their festive red and green flowers scream festivity and are a great addition to your household decorations. So it may surprise you that the one piece of foliage to rival the Christmas tree wasn’t always a popular plant of choice. In their native country of Mexico, where Roman Catholicism is the predominant faith, Poinsettias are referred to as ‘Flor de la Noche Buena’, translating to Flower of the Holy Night. It is thought to have coined its name because it resembles the Star of Bethlehem. It is a popular Christmas flower that can be presented in a multitude of displays.

Poinsettia Red in 13cm Red Ceramic Pot Gift

Initially regarded as a weed, Poinsettias gained popularity after a poor young girl gave the weeds as a gift at a nativity service. The angels showed compassion toward the young girl and transformed them into the red and green flowers we know and recognise today. The plants were later rediscovered by the American botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett. While carrying out duties as the US ambassador to Mexico, he stumbled across the ‘Mexican Fire Plant’ as he called them, introducing the festive foliage to America.

How To Care For Your Poinsettia So It Lasts All Year

Poinsettias bloom between November and December, and this is typically when they will be available to buy in shops. Choosing a fully grown healthy plant with full colourful leaves is the best option for buying your Poinsettia. It may seem surprising for a winter plant, but Poinsettias require a temperature no lower than 13°C to thrive. This is usually the mistake people make when it comes to caring for their Poinsettias throughout winter. Unfortunately, once your Poinsettia has been exposed to the cold, it will go into physiological shock and begin to wilt and lose its leaves. This process cannot be reversed and will continue until the plant eventually dies off.

Rules For Poinsettia Plants

There are a few specific factors you need to take into account when caring for your Poinsettia plant. They usually don’t require re-potting over the festive season so you can leave it until the spring. However, you must remember the conditions they like so they can flourish throughout the winter. Poinsettias like:

  • Bright, indirect sunlight
  • Warm temperatures (13-15°C)
  • To be kept away from draughts
  • Multipurpose soil with plenty of room for drainage
  • Infrequent watering (when the surface of the soil is dry)
  • Regular misting of the bracts

Getting Your Poinsettia Plants To Flower Again

This part isn’t always easy, but it can be done if you pay special attention to your Poinsettia plant throughout the year. You must follow some critical steps for your plant to see another festive season. You may be able to keep your Poinsettia alive for consecutive years. Still, for it to re-flower its beautiful red bracts once more, you must prune your Poinsettia early in the spring. You want to cut it back by about 10cm, keeping it at the same consistent temperature of 13-15°C. Leave your Poinsettia until May, then re-pot it in a larger pot with fresh peat-free compost. It is important not to let it get too hot throughout the summer months aiming for a temperature no higher than 18°C.

The most crucial step when trying to get your Poinsettia to re-flower is shortening its hours in daylight. Longer nights and shorter days signal your Poinsettia to start flowering, so mimicking that will help guarantee that it is ready to re-flower in time for Christmas. You should aim to move your Poinsettia into a dark room or cupboard for a minimum of 12 hours each day.

Give The Gift Of a Plant This Christmas

Christmas basket with red cyclamen

If you have never taken care of a Poinsettia plant before, or you have tried and failed to keep it going longer than the Christmas dinner leftovers, why not try again this year? Following these crucial steps will set you well on the way to becoming a proud owner of a happy and flourishing Poinsettia year after year. If Poinsettias aren’t to your tastes or you are looking for the ideal gift for someone special, then we have plenty of other houseplants that would be a perfect place to start! Why Now is The Perfect Time To Plant Perennial Plants

Technically, you can plant perennial plants any time your soil is workable. Practically, the best times to plant perennials are spring or fall. These seasons allow plants to get settled and grow new roots before summer's hot, dry weather arrives. Planting in summer is great, but you'll need to water frequently. As gardeners, we are always at the mercy of the weather. But the weather can also be our greatest ally! With the Met Office recently forecasting a month of rain followed by a two-month heatwave, now is the perfect time to invest or even re-invest in perennial and even late bedding plants to exploit that explosion of colour for your garden.

This is the last great opportunity to get your garden ready for the rest of the summer.

The Power of Perennial Plants

Perennial plants are the stalwarts of the garden. They live for more than two years and are known for their ability to survive harsh weather conditions and come back year after year. They are an important part of the ecosystem, providing food and shelter for wildlife, and helping to prevent erosion.

Perennials are often used in gardens and landscaping for their colourful flowers, foliage, and texture. They are popular among gardeners for their low maintenance and long-lasting beauty. Some examples of popular perennial plants include Rudbeckia fulgida GoldstrumSenecio Angel Wings, hostas and rudbeckias.

Why Plant Now?

The continuing and upcoming rain provides the perfect conditions for planting. Rainwater is a natural, unchlorinated source of water that plants love. It helps to compact the soil around the roots, ensuring they have good contact with the soil and can start to grow immediately.

Following the rain, the predicted heatwave will give your plants a growth spurt. The combination of warm temperatures and plenty of water will help your plants establish quickly and start to flower. Your garden will look amazing.

So why wait? Now is the perfect time to invest or reinvest in perennial and bedding plants for your garden. Not only will you be adding colour and interest to your garden, but you'll also be providing a habitat for wildlife, especially bees and birds and contributing to the health of your local environment.

Transforming Your Patio with Small Space Plants

Vertical Gardening

When space is at a premium, look up! Utilize vertical gardening techniques to make the most of your patio walls or railings. Hang planters, install trellises, or create a living wall with cascading foliage. Incorporating different types of climbing plants such as ivy, jasmine, or even compact fruiting vines can add a touch of elegance and greenery to your vertical space.

Experiment with different sizes and leaf textures to create an indoor jungle that captivates the senses.

Vertical Indoor Gardens

Maximize vertical space indoors by implementing creative vertical gardening techniques. Install wall-mounted planters or vertical hanging systems to grow a variety of plants on your walls. This not only adds a touch of green but also acts as a living work of art, turning your small space into a stunning botanical gallery.

Windowsill Gardens

Utilize your window sills to create mini gardens filled with herbs, small flowering plants, or succulents. These sunny spots are perfect for plants that require direct sunlight. Moving House With Plants Guide

When moving hosue with plants in tow, any plant parent understands how much care and attention our plants need. They’re almost as needy as real children! That and our bond with our plants is even more apparent when it comes to moving house with plants. Of course, it is a hectic and stressful process, and our plants hate it even more than we do.

But it must be done if you want to bring them to your new home. To make the whole experience as stress-free as possible for you and your plants, we have compiled an extensive guide on moving house with plants. We have covered all the hints, tips and tricks to make moving with plants as simple as possible and answered some frequently asked questions you might be wondering.

Can You Take Plants When Moving House?

Moving house with your plants is tricky but possible. It’s just going to take some care and patience to ensure they survive the process and journey, as plants are delicate. They also hate change.

But before you put your plants through the big move, it’s important to understand what you can take with you. Indoor potted plants are much simpler to move, but garden plants can be more difficult. Anything that has been planted for only a year or two in the soil should be safe to move. This is because their root systems won’t yet be too large or extensive, and if you do lose some in the process, it won’t be detrimental to the plant’s health. Any long-standing plants will have buried their roots too deep, and to try and remove them will be a death sentence for your thriving plants, so it is best to say your goodbyes and part ways.

How to Pack Plants for Moving in 3 Steps

Once you have decided what will be safe for travel, it’s time to prepare for the big move! You can successfully move house with your plants if you follow advice for every step of the moving journey.

how to pack plants for a house move

1. Before Moving Day

You will need to go over several considerations before the big moving day. Firstly, you will need to confirm the transport for your plants. For example, if you have hired moving vans, you will need to speak to the company first and find out their policy on transporting plant life. Because of their notoriously delicate nature, many moving companies prefer not to transport plants to avoid blame for damaged goods. We recommend taking your plants with you in your own car so that you can keep a careful eye on them.

You should also check your plants for any pests or bugs, especially before putting them in close proximity during the journey. If there are some undetected creepy crawlies, you risk spreading these from one plant to another and inside your new home once you arrive. Take this time to prune your plants if they look overgrown. This minimises the risk of losing plant limbs during the journey as they are more compact.

Finally, don’t water your plants right before moving! This excess water can make the journey incredibly messy and much harder for you as your plant pots will carry the excess water weight.

2. During the Move

When moving day comes, you want to ensure your plants are well-prepared for the journey. This means you need to learn how to pack plants when moving. Start by removing your plants from any decorative pots, if possible. By doing this, you can cut down on the weight by transporting your plants in plastic nursery pots, and it also minimises the risk of damage to your decorative pots.

Next, place your plants in individual boxes where possible. You can keep them in place with newspaper or packing peanuts, being careful not to squash the leaves and limbs. For particularly large plants that won’t fit inside a box, try horticultural fleece to keep your plants padded and protected throughout the journey.

3. Once You’re Settled

When you arrive at your new home, it can be tempting to put off unpacking until you have rested and settled in. But when it comes to your plants, you must unpack them as soon as possible to prevent them from sitting in the dark. You should also place them in a calm and neutral space while they settle after travel, even if this isn’t going to be their new spot.

Leave them in this spot for three or four days and avoid giving them too much water. A good mist will be more gentle for them rather than being soaked with water. For the following couple of weeks, you should also avoid feeding, pruning or repotting your plants as this can be too traumatic for them after their upheaval and send them into growing mode when they should still be adjusting.

Do Plants Get Stressed When Moving?

As we have mentioned, plants find being moved very stressful, which can lead to a continuous decline. Here are a few signs that your plants are experiencing stress that you should look out for:

  • Wilting
  • Dried Leaves
  • Yellow Lower Leaves
  • Leaf Loss
  • Stunted Growth

If you notice any of these symptoms with your plants, you can seek further advice from our Dr Green Finger’s guide for indoor plants. As well as shop for a range of plant care supplies available.

Taking Care of Your Plants

We hope by now you feel more prepared ahead of your moving date. Remember, no matter how far the distance, whether you’re moving up the road or to the other end of the country, you can ensure your plants survive the journey with the help of our tips and advice.

Proper watering is essential for the health and vitality of both indoor and outdoor plants. Whether you're tending to your lush garden or cultivating a thriving indoor oasis, understanding when and how often to water your plants is crucial. In this blog post, Dr Green Fingers shares valuable watering tips for maintaining healthy plants and ensuring their optimal growth.

Watering Tips For Plants

Watering Outdoor Plants:

Watering outdoor plants is a fundamental aspect of maintaining a healthy and thriving garden. Proper watering practices are essential for providing plants with the hydration they need to grow, flower, and produce fruits or vegetables. Understanding the watering needs of your outdoor plants, including the frequency and timing of watering, is crucial for their overall health and resilience. By following watering best practices and adapting to environmental conditions, you can ensure that your outdoor plants receive the right amount of water, helping them flourish and thrive in your garden.

Understanding Watering Needs:

Each plant has specific watering requirements based on its species, size, and environmental conditions. Factors such as temperature, humidity, and soil type influence the frequency and quantity of water needed. It's essential to familiarize yourself with the water needs of individual plant varieties in your garden.

Watering Frequency:

To determine the appropriate watering frequency, consider the following guidelines: Newly planted or recently transplanted outdoor plants generally require more frequent watering until their root systems become established. As a general rule, water your outdoor plants deeply once or twice a week rather than shallowly every day. Deep watering encourages deeper root growth, making plants more resilient to drought.

Optimum Watering Times:

Watering during the early morning or late evening is ideal for outdoor plants. These periods offer cooler temperatures and lower evaporation rates, allowing plants to absorb water effectively. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day to minimize water loss due to evaporation.

Watering Indoor Plants:

Watering indoor plants is a vital component of caring for your indoor greenery and creating a vibrant and inviting indoor oasis. Proper watering ensures that your indoor plants receive the necessary moisture for healthy growth and development. Understanding the unique watering requirements of different indoor plant species, including the frequency and timing of watering, is key to their well-being. By adopting appropriate watering practices and paying attention to individual plant needs, you can provide your indoor plants with optimal hydration, promoting lush foliage and vibrant blooms. With the right watering approach, you can enjoy a thriving indoor garden that brings beauty and serenity to your living spaces.

Assessing Water Needs:

father and daughter watering indoor plants

Indoor plants have different water requirements compared to their outdoor counterparts. Factors such as pot size, humidity levels, and light conditions influence their water needs. It's crucial to evaluate each indoor plant's specific requirements.

Watering Frequency:

To determine the appropriate watering frequency for your indoor plants, consider the following factors: - Check the moisture level of the soil by inserting your finger about an inch deep. If the soil feels dry at this depth, it's time to water.  Avoid over watering indoor plants, as it can lead to root rot and other moisture-related issues. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between watering sessions.

Optimum Watering Times:

Indoor plants can be watered at any time of the day, as long as the soil has dried out sufficiently since the previous watering. Take care not to water during the evening or nighttime, as excess moisture can create a damp environment, potentially leading to fungal diseases.

Additional Watering Tips for Both Indoor and Outdoor Plants:

  • Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the plants.
  • Direct the water toward the base of the plant, avoiding excessive wetting of foliage.
  • Consider using a watering can with a narrow spout or a drip irrigation system for precise and controlled watering.
  • Grouping plants with similar water requirements together can simplify the watering process.
  • Choose large pots for your plants as they won’t dry out as quickly as small ones.
  • Group pots together to make watering easier.
  • Monitor plants closely during hot weather or dry periods, as they may require more frequent watering.

Proper watering is crucial for the health and well-being of your indoor and outdoor plants. By understanding the unique watering needs of each plant, determining the appropriate watering frequency, and selecting optimal watering times, you can ensure that your plants thrive and flourish. Remember to assess moisture levels, avoid over watering, and adapt to changing environmental conditions to keep your green companions happy and hydrated.

Note: The information provided in this article serves as general guidelines. It's important to consider the specific requirements of individual plant species and adjust watering practices accordingly.

Cleopatra herself cited aloe vera as the key to her flawless, beautiful skin. So, it is no wonder the aloe vera plant symbolises beauty, healing and protection. Gift this plant to someone who is a big believer in holistic healing or someone you want to show your care and love for.

Cactus Plant for Support

There are a couple of excellent reasons why you should choose a cactus plant for a gift. Firstly, it is widely known to be a low-maintenance plant, so it’s great to gift it to a plant newbie or someone discovering their green thumb. Beyond their extraordinary resistance to drought, cacti symbolise resilience, endurance and toughness. This makes it perfect for giving to friends going through a tough time to highlight how much you admire their ability not to give up and keep fighting, no matter the circumstances.

For keen gardeners and lovers of nature alike, we all look forward to the glorious summer months when English gardens are thriving most. Whether we plan to spend our days on outdoor plant care, pruning and nurturing our beloved plants or simply want to enjoy the scenery while we have drink and nibbles in the garden, summer is the time to do it. Naturally, we want to keep our garden as healthy and happy to enjoy thriving and flourishing plants for as long as possible. But the outdoors brings many other influences and variables outside our control, so what can we do to help?

Don’t worry; Dr Green Fingers is back and ready to help. At Plants by Post, we have pulled together the most common problems your outdoor plants may face and how you can fix or prevent them. As well as a few more tips and seeds of advice on oiutdoor plant care, sprinkled in for good measure.

Also, don’t forget you can look for expert advice on indoor plants in our Dr Green Fingers series.

Why Are My Outdoor Plants Dying?

There are several causes which may lead to your outdoor plants dying. Some are more common than others, and there is no one size fits all solution to bringing your plants back from the brink of death. With the proper care and maintenance, you can prevent possible issues leading to your plant dying. However, once a problem or issue has occurred, you need to know the right course of action to fix it.

6 Common Outdoor Plant Problems

Before we find the solution, we need to diagnose the problem. There are many problems outdoor plants face, and we have listed the most common you may encounter. Work through our list to find the issue causing damage to your carefully kept garden and find the answers to problems you may face. When it comes to your babies, plant parents must be prepared for any problem, and Dr Fingers is here to help you get equipped.

1. Black Spots

Seeing black spots on the leaves of your beloved plants can be alarming, almost like watching our plants die right in front of our eyes. More commonly, this problem affects roses; however, all leaf plants can exhibit this symptom.

Typically, black spots on leaves indicate a fungal disease brought on by a combination of warm and damp weather. Think about those humid summer days. Once black spots have developed, the leaves will turn yellow and eventually drop off, leaving you with a bald plant unable to photosynthesise.

You should position your plants in garden areas with good air circulation to prevent black spots from taking over your plant leaves. This means avoiding corners where your plant may be boxed in and out of the summer breeze. On top of this, ensure you don’t over water your plants and keep them in a good position for sunlight.

2. Powder Mildew

Are you a veggie lover with your garden filled with vegetable plants? Nothing is more satisfying than watching the seedlings you plant grow delicious and ripe vegetables. But first, you have to make sure they survive to be able to sprout. A common problem outdoor vegetable plants face is the appearance of a powdery type of mildew.

More commonly, this mildew will affect melons, squash and cucumbers; unfortunately, once it has appeared, there is no cure. But you can control it and limit the spread to salvage your vegetables. You can limit the spread by picking off any affected leaves you spot and spraying the plant with a fungicide. If you have none to hand, you can also create a mix of milk and water to spray on affected plants.

3. Blossom-End Rot

Powdery mildew is not the only terror affecting your vegetable plants. The appearance of blossom-end rot on your botanical fruits is equally as alarming. Unfortunately, there is no saving pieces that have been affected. This means you should remove affected fruit from the plant and discard it, do not attempt to eat these.

Botanical fruit, or culinary vegetables, commonly affected by blossom-end rot include tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. It appears as a dark, rotting spot at the bottom of the fruit and is caused by a calcium deficiency resulting from a lack of soil moisture. Luckily, the rest of the plant can be salvaged once affected fruit are picked. Simply make minor adjustments in your watering routine.

4. Drought

In the summer, a lack of water can wreak havoc on your garden. Of course, we all know that plants need water to thrive, and some are more thirsty than others. If you’re concerned that summer has been a dry period for your plants, you can boost their reliance on dry weather with compost. You may also want to mulch your garden to help keep the soil moist and the surface layer from baking and becoming dry under the summer sun.

Suppose you’re concerned that work and other commitments will keep you from regularly watering your garden in summer. In that case, you may also want to consider a timed hose, sprinklers or other automatic watering function.

5. Plant Drowning

On the reverse of drought, it is also possible for your garden plants

caring for outdoor plantsto drown. Yes, we understand it is a tricky line to navigate!

Rain off the back of particularly hot days can be heavy, and the flood of excess water in your garden can suck the nitrogen out of your plants. This will leave your leaves starved for nutrients and become yellow. The solution? Create the best possible drainage for your garden plants by adding gravel to the bottom of plant pots. This allows excess water to drain freely through the drainage holes in your pots.

6. Aphids Infestation

If your plants look weak and frail, it might not actually be your own doing. In Britain, more than 500 species of aphids are found in all parts of the country, according to The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). These small bugs infest quickly and drink the sap from your plants, leaving them distorted, warped and weak as they cannot thrive. On top of this, aphids will also excrete a sticky, black honeydew which will cover your leaves in black mould. So, while these bugs need plants to survive, they are unforgiving of their habitats.

If you notice symptoms of an aphid infestation, you can usually spot these small, pear-shaped bugs with the naked eye. If the infestation is large, you should allow nature to take its natural course. Usually, aphids will build strong colonies in the spring. Still, by late summer, natural predators, such as ladybugs, earwigs and hoverflies, will be active and remove the pests for you.

To prevent these bugs, keep an eye on your plants and stamp our infestations before they become out of control.

biophilic design in your home

If you are a nature lover, you may have previously heard of the term biophilic design and might be keen to implement it into your home. However, if you’re new to the biophilic design concept, we want to tell you all about it at Plants by Post.

We have created a guide to biophilic design to help you get started with the basics, from what it is, its benefits and how you can implement it in your home.

What is Biophilic Design?

how to use biophilic design in your home

The term biophilic comes from biophilia, the human tendency to interact with other forms of life. As a species, we love to dote on animals and help plants to thrive. So, in terms of design, biophilic is the creation of harmony between the indoors and outdoors.

But why do so many people care about biophilic design at the moment?

Why is Biophilic Design Trending?

Biophilic design is a trending interior choice, which is why you might have seen it mentioned or talked about a lot more often. In fact, it is one of the biggest interior design trends this year, and we’re sure it will continue to grow in popularity.

We believe the spike in interest in biophilic design is a consequence of the recent global pandemic which resulted in countless lockdowns across the globe. In the UK, we were stuck in a national lockdown for the better part of two years, and so being trapped indoors made many of us yearn for nature.

Plus, the resulting after-effects of the pandemic, like remote positions and working from home opportunities, means we are doing more to surround ourselves with nature. This is where biophilic design comes in! But it is not just about missing the outdoors; there are many more benefits of biophilic design.

3 Benefits of Biophilic Design

Each year, we spend more time indoors. So the need for biophilic design has never been higher. But there are actually a number of benefits to incorporating biophilic design into your space. To help convince you to implement this trending yet timeless design choice in your home, we want to open your eyes to the way it can benefit and improve your life.

1. Physical Benefits of Biophilia

Introducing a biophilic design into your space will actually make a physical difference to those living in your home. Having plants and greenery on your property will improve air quality, as plants will naturally remove harmful volatile organic compounds. These are usually found in paint, carpets and furniture.

2. Reduced Stress and Anxiety

Did you know that proximity to nature improves our mental well-being? This is often why so many of us instinctively want to take a walk when feeling down or stressed.

Spending too much time in confined spaces, like a home office, can cause feelings of stress and anxiety. So, incorporating a biophilic design can counteract this and help us to maintain a calm and soothing atmosphere. The presence of nature in our space allows us to feel more confident and improve self-esteem with a more positive outlook on life.

3. Improved Productivity and Engagement

Suppose you work from home or spend a lot of time at home during the day. In that case, utilising a biophilic design can improve your productivity. It helps to create a space full of life and removes any sterile atmosphere usually related to working conditions. In the past, offices were kept clear and simple to allow focus and minimal distractions. But we now know that this has the opposite effect and makes us feel uninspired.

Filling your workspace with greenery and nature will improve your engagement and energy levels drastically.

How to Implement Biophilic Design in your Home

So, have you been convinced to incorporate biophilic design in your home? Whether you want to improve your lifestyle in just one or all of the ways that biophilia can benefit you, then we can help. Here are all the ways that you can implement biophilic design into your home, from the small and simple steps to transformative gestures you will fall in love with.

Prioritise Plants

One of the first and simplest ways you can implement biophilia into your home is with live plants. If you have a natural green thumb and love to spend time in the garden, you may already have an idea of what plants you would love to bring indoors and how to care for them.

But if you are a new plant parent, start with some easy-to-care-for plants. Succulents, spider plants and aloe vera plants are all low-maintenance and great for beginners looking for a way to add more greenery to their homes. However, you can browse a wide collection of unkillable houseplants at Plants by Post to help you get started with your collection.

Emphasise the Outdoors

Of course, a huge part of bringing nature inside is the focus on the outdoors. So, if you can help it, make sure you’re taking full advantage of windows in your space and using them to create a focal point in every room. This allows you to highlight the view outside and use it as a replacement for wall art.

If the windows in your space are small and few between, then you can use mirrors on the opposite walls to reflect back the view from outside and open up the space even further with this clever trick.

Create an Indoor-Outdoor Connection

Fostering the connection between your indoor and outdoor space is a huge part of creating an effortless biophilic design. This is easy to incorporate, especially if you have sliding or bifold patio doors that you can open while you work and create a seamless transition from outdoors to in.

However, even just opening the windows throughout the day and breathing in the fresh air and taking in the sounds from outside are enough to accomplish this.

Finish with Natural Elements

For a truly encompassing biophilic design, it is not all about fresh air and adding as many plants to your space as possible. Just like any interior design choice, you must also pay attention to the little details to tie the look together.

With biophilia, this means utilising natural elements to create a cohesive space. Fill your home with tones and textures that are reminiscent of nature, such as soft brown and beige tones or green and blue shades. Adding wood, leather or stone materials to your decor is an easy way to do this, and then accessories with woven and jute materials add more dimension to your home.

Decorating with Nature

Are you ready to make the biophilic design work in your home? We hope we have inspired you to open up your space, add live plants and create a calming atmosphere. Once you get started, we know you’ll fall in love with the aesthetic and vibe you achieve. Explore our wide collection of indoor plants available at Plants by Post now.

However, remember plants are not just for decoration; they are living organisms we need to take care of properly. If you don’t think you’re ready to become a full-time plant parent just yet, explore our low-maintenance plant collection to get started.

hyacinth flowers

Hyacinths are a beautiful yet tricky plant to master caring for. Their bright, colourful flowers and delicious scent make them a popular plant among many passionate plant owners, so it’s important to know how to properly care for them so they can thrive year after year. Their winter flowers make them popular Christmas gifts and can brighten up those dull and dark winter days. Whether planting your hyacinths outdoors or planning on keeping them indoors, using the appropriate care methods will help you get the best out of these little bulbs.

Planting Your Hyacinth Bulbs

There are a few key steps to follow when planting your hyacinth bulbs, whether in indoor pots or your garden. You must remember to wear gloves when handling hyacinth bulbs, as they can irritate the skin.

When planting hyacinths, you must:

  • Plant the bulbs in the autumn months
  • Pick a sunny spot in moist soil
  • Plant your bulbs at least 8cm apart (5cm if potting)
  • Completely cover the bulbs with soil
  • Use peat-free multi-purpose compost if potting
  • Use slow-release fertiliser in the soil

Caring For Your Hyacinth Bulb After Flowering

Most people are quick to throw their hyacinths away once they are done flowering, but there is still plenty of life left in them long after their flowers have gone. With the proper care and attention, you can ensure your hyacinth blooms with beautiful flowers each year. After your bulb has flowered, it requires water about once a month to keep the soil moist but not water-logged.

Hyacinths lie dormant 8 to 12 weeks post-flowering. It is essential that once the flowers have turned brown, you deadhead the entire stalk. This will help the foliage die back properly and store energy for when it next comes to bloom. Once all the leaves have died off, it’s time to cut the entire plant back down to the soil. You should be left only with the bulb and roots. You should aim to re-pot your hyacinth or plant it outside while it is cut back to ensure it has enough room to grow throughout the following year.

Keeping Your Pets Safe Around Hyacinth Flowers

Hyacinths can pose a problem if you have pets, as their bulbs are poisonous. They contain the substance, oxalic acid which can irritate the skin if handled without gloves. The majority of spring bulbs are toxic to both animals and humans if ingested, and hyacinths are no exception. Humans are unlikely to mistake the bulbs, but animals such as cats can mistake them for vegetables like onions. If ingested, they can cause serious stomach pains and even elevate heart rate. Putting a form of pet repellent near your outdoor hyacinths will help to keep your animals safe. You should also try and keep your indoor hyacinths in a location that is out of reach to any pets to avoid any issues.

Grape hyacinths (muscari atlanticum) are different than other hyacinths however. Known for their medicinal qualities, their flowers are edible and can be enjoyed as a garnish on meals. These plants are distinctive because of their bright purple flowers, but it is important not to get them confused with other varieties of hyacinth.

How Often Should You Water Your Hyacinth?

You should aim to water your indoor hyacinths every two to three days during warmer months and once a week in the winter. They thrive in moist soil, but the water needs to be able to drain away easily to avoid water logging the soil. It is crucial that you don’t under water or over water your hyacinths if you want them to survive and bloom with beautiful flowers.

If you have planted hyacinth bulbs in your garden them you should prevent the soil from drying out by watering them when you feel they need it. Rainfall will help to keep the soil damp, so it is important not to over water them in wetter months.

So, it is no wonder that often, we struggle to find the perfect gift that ticks all of the boxes we have set for ourselves.

Luckily, we are here to help at Plants by Post!

We have created the ultimate sustainable gift guide that pulls together the inspiration you need for every occasion. From gifts that say I love you to little treasures that show you’re thinking of them, we have the perfect present in our gift collection.

Why Should I Give Sustainable Plant Gifts ?

Sustainability has become somewhat of a buzzword across the retail market as the demand for eco-friendly plant gifts and products increases. In fact, a recent survey found that 92% of people in the UK are concerned about sustainability in consumption habits.

So, when it comes to buying sustainable plant gifts, we as a nation are turning away from the generic and commercial shopping landscape and investing in presents that mean something beyond the shiny label. We want gifts that are built-to-last, reusable or recyclable.

After all, why would we gift others what we wouldn’t appreciate or buy for ourselves? You may even be buying a present for someone who takes great care with their ecological footprint, so you will need to buy a gift that suits them.

We think the answer to your problems is a sustainable plant gift!

Sustainable Plant Gifts Delivered

Foliage and flowers are the ultimate sustainable plant gifts, as there is no unnecessary packaging or waste of any kind. Your loved ones can appreciate the plant for its beauty and care and tend to it to keep it thriving in their homes. Even if the plant eventually dies, it can either be composted or turned into another work of art, like a pressed flower portrait!

We love gifting herb plants and citrus trees as your recipients can enjoy using fresh herbs and fruits in their cooking for strong and flavourful tastes. They make for a great gift that keeps on giving.

Plus, at Plants by Post, we are proud to offer eco-friendly gift wrap that ensures your present looks amazing with no guilt!

New Home Plant Gifts

Moving into a new home is something to be celebrated. Whether it's a young family starting their new chapter together or even a friend moving away from their parents for the first time, it's a huge achievement.

So, of course, we want to commemorate the milestone and christen the new home with a plant gift. But why is it we always go straight to houseplants?

A houseplant as a new home gift is symbolic and represents the growth and change the recipient embarks on. For this reason, we recommend a Sansevieria Superba potted gift for your loved ones moving into a new home.

Otherwise known as a snake plant, this interesting plant is beautiful to look at and thought to bring good luck and energy. The snake plant’s tall, pointed leaves are considered to be sword-like and cut through any obstacles and negative energy, allowing only positivity in the home.

Romantic Plant Gifts

Suppose you’re searching for a romantic gift for an anniversary or Valentine's day. In that case, you may feel limited to the likes of roses and other bouquets. These are beautiful gifts with a lot of meaning behind them, but you shouldn’t feel limited to always choosing the same flowers for your beloved.

Why not choose a rose plant for a romantic and sustainable gift that will last?

This popular flowering plant sprouts lovely coloured flowers and beautiful scents. The rose plant has it's roots coming from Central Asia and grows in wonderful shrubs or bushes. We think the bright red is perfect for saying ‘I love you’.

Don’t forget to add some eco-friendly pink gift wrap to your rose for the perfect finishing touch!

Gifts To Say Thank You

A plant gift is a perfect way to thank someone for helping you; this could be for house-sitting while you’re on holiday, offering advice or taking care of your loved ones.

So, what better than giving them a gift they will thank you for every time they cook? By gifting a fruit, vegetable or herb plant, your loved ones can enjoy fresh ingredients that promise unbeatable taste. Plus, this helps them in their sustainability efforts, a win-win for everyone!

Consider gifting them a citrus tree or herb plant they can use in their cooking, or explore our range of orange trees  that will ensure they have fresh fruit always.

Finding the Perfect Gift

Are you feeling inspired? We hope we have given you something to think about when shopping for your next occasion so you can find a gift they will truly love and appreciate.

Remember, we have a huge selection of gifts available at Plants by Post, and there is something for everyone in our selection. Not to mention our popular Christmas gift collection that is sure to fill their home with festive joy, finished by our new eco-friendly Christmas gift wrap to tie it all together.

 plants in pots

When it comes to taking the best care of our plants, and picking the right plant pot for your plant , many of us spend time trailing through blogs, books and forums for the best tips and advice. But sometimes, in our search to do the very best for our plants, we neglect our plant's best friends, their pots! Or maybe pots are their homes?

Whatever relationship you envision between your plant and pot, one thing is clear; the bond is strong! So, to take care of one, we must take care of the other.

To help you on your plant care journey, we have pulled together an extensive guide on plant pots that covers everything from material and drainage to soil and size. No pot has been left unturned in this handy guide that aims to help you with all your potting questions. You’re welcome!

Picking The Right Plant Pot - How Hard Can It Be?

If you’re someone that thinks aesthetics first when picking your home and garden decor, you might not like what we have to say. Of course, there are countless super cute plant pots out there, but just choosing the style that best fits your home is not enough. You need to put your plants' needs first.

Drainage

The first thing you need to consider for your plant pot is whether it has sufficient drainage. This is important as plants can fall victim to root rot if left to sit in a pool of water, which is made worse if you have not quite grasped what enough or too much water for your plants is.

For this reason, we will always recommend that those new to gardening choose plant pots with drainage holes in the bottom. This allows some water to escape from the soil if too much has been given.

However, that does not mean that pots without drainage are totally useless, and more experienced gardeners can utilise them well. If you have a pot with no drainage, just remember to only water the plant with about one-third water capacity of the pot to ensure you’re not overwatering the plant.

You could always try filling the bottom of your pot with lava rocks or gravel beneath the soil to allow excess water to drain through.

Material

When shopping for a plant pot, the most common materials you will find are plastic, wood and ceramic. If you want to know our favourite, we will always opt for a ceramic plant pot!

When we see any depiction of a plant pot, from stylised illustrations to even children’s media, pots are always shown to be classic terracotta. There’s a reason for this! Terracotta ceramic is a porous clay, making it the perfect choice for potting plants as it ensures the pot will always dry more evenly.

The only issue with terracotta pots is their weight and durability, and if dropped, they are most likely to crack and break.

When caring for seedlings, you might want to choose simple growing pots or plastic pots that you can pot and re-pot seeds and budding plants in as they grow. These will be easier and lighter to move around the garden or greenhouse.

What Size Pot Do I Need?

Before you buy seeds or a plant, you must first consider what pot you will plant them in. This is because it is essential to a plant's proper care and growth that you plant them in an appropriate pot.

Often plants are referred to and sold in sizes. However, this actually means the size of the pot they are sold in. The measurement is of the diameter of the top of the pot.

When buying a plant, you should plan to repot it in a container that is around 1-2 inches larger than the pot it arrived in. This ensures the plant has enough space to grow without becoming ‘pot-bound’. However, if the plant you are buying comes in a pot that is more than 10 inches wide, then you should plan to re-pot in a 2-3 inches larger container. The container should also be half the height of your plant.

Other times, the plant pot may be measured by the volume of the pot by litres; however, diameter is more common.

What's the difference between a pot and a planter?

You might also notice that the names ‘pots’ and ‘planters’ are used interchangeably. Sometimes they are the same, but there are a couple of key differences. Pots are usually used for a single plant and are often a smaller, round shape. They can also be used both indoors and outdoors.

Planters, on the other hand, are generally for outdoor use only and can house a number of plants in a display. Their size is also much more irregular!

What Soil Do I Put in my Pot?

Growing plants in pot containers can be difficult, as the soil can not regenerate itself or gain extra nutrients from the earth. The roots are also limited in their sprawling and depth that they can reach.

It is a common mistake for new gardeners just to fill their pots with soil from the garden, but often this won’t work for your plant. Garden soil is too heavy for use in containers and will become too compacted, making it nearly impossible for your plants to grow inside of it.

To find the best potting soil for your needs, it's best just to read the information of each label and type carefully. Many different varieties are available with options best suited to different plant types, like flowers, vegetables etc.

Potting Soil Checklist

Here are a few things to note when looking for potting soil to find the best option for your needs:

  • Ensure that the medium is light and fluffy
  • Look for good drainage that also holds moisture
  • Choose a porous soil that allows water and air to reach the roots
  • Avoid soils that have tiny bugs flying around it
  • Avoid large amounts of bark or sand in the soil
  • Avoid soil with an unpleasant smell

Don’t Forget to Re-Pot, and You’re Good to Go!

Sometimes when we’re not feeling our best and just need a new lease on life, we treat ourselves to a day of pampering and self-care to feel better. Well, your plant needs the same care and attention!

Repotting your plant gives it more room to grow and thrive. However, it doesn’t always have to mean going up a pot size; and instead can be a good opportunity to revitalise its nutrients. Cacti and Succulents

Cacti and succulents are notoriously easy-to-care-for plants, making them a popular choice for many beginner gardeners and those lacking a green thumb. But if your cactus becomes shrivelled, discoloured and loses its spikes, you may wonder where you went wrong.

But if you’re asking yourself, am I the first person to kill a cactus? Let us alleviate your worries!

Here we have pulled together a basic guide to cacti that covers the tell-tale sign that your cactus is unwell, dying or dead and how you can save it!

Can You Kill a Cactus?

Although they are generally very easy to look after, cacti can still die if not given the proper care, no matter how little it is required. So, you’re certainly not the first person to kill a cactus!

5 Signs Your Cactus is Dead or Dying

If you’re not sure of the state of your cactus, here are five signs that your cactus is dying:

1. Shrivelled Appearance

Species of different cacti can vary greatly in appearance, so there is no one-size-fits-all rule as to what a healthy cactus should like. However, if you suspect that the appearance has changed and not for the better, a simple Google search to compare your cactus to images online will help you get a better idea of its state.

The good news is that a shrivelled appearance may signify that your cactus is dying and not already dead!

Generally, cacti should have plump and firm skin, and if your cacti look more withered and like a husk, it might be time to take action to revive it.

2. Shaky Cacti

Just like a person becomes shaky in old age, your cactus can become similarly unstable when its roots can no longer support it. So, if you notice that your cactus is shaky in its soil or has even fallen over in its soil, it is dead.

Shaky cacti are usually the product of root rot, caused by either overwatering or underwatering, and unfortunately, there is no saving it.

3. Discolouration

If you notice discolouration, your cactus might be close to death or, in some cases, already dead. This will usually present as yellow patches on their way to turning brown.

However, it is also important to note that a changing colour might be perfectly normal in some cases. For this reason, you should pay close attention to your cacti as soon as you start to notice a slight change and adapt your care for the cacti accordingly.

Older cacti go through a process of ‘corking’, which essentially means they develop light brown skin over their green layer, giving them an aged appearance.

4. Losing Spikes

If your cactus has strong, healthy spikes and you begin to notice them drop off, this is a sign that they are unwell or already dead. A cactus losing spikes may also be accompanied by discolouration around the spikes before they fall off and shrivelling.

Once again, the cause of dropping spikes on a cactus is linked to root rot.

5. Soft Texture and Bad Smells

As previously mentioned, cacti should feel plump and firm, so if you notice your cactus becomes soft or mushy to the touch, it could rot. This is due to cactus stem rot; however, the rot can occur in any part of the cactus and then spread to the rest of the plant.

You might also be able to smell the rot on your cactus. If it starts giving off an unpleasant odour, the cactus is most likely dying and cannot be saved.

If you notice just some small, wet spots, you can attempt to save the cactus by cutting these parts off and leaving them to dry out in a very sunny place.

Why is My Cactus Dying?

Now that you know what warning signs to look for in the event of a dying or dead cactus let’s go over what may be causing it!

You’re Over or Underwatering It

This one might be a little confusing to get your head around, but it is possible to over or underwater your cactus. The plant requires a very specific amount of water for them to survive. However, the general rule of thumb is less is more for these plants.

If you overwater your cactus, the roots will sit in a water pool leading to root rot. This will kill the cactus slowly but surely, with rot stemming from the roots and working its way to the rest of the plant.

Many assume these desert plants don’t require any water, so the plant falls victim to underwatering. While the plant can certainly survive without as much water as other plants, it still requires some to survive.

It’s Not Getting Enough Sun

It is widely known that cacti are desert plants, and so naturally, they are biologically conditioned for the sun beating down on them. Suppose your cactus doesn’t get enough sunlight in your home or garden. In that case, it might communicate this to you through dropping stems, scraggly hairs, dull colour and little to no flowering.

Similar to the water balance, it is also possible for your cactus to get too much sun, resulting in sunburn. The best course of action is to place or plant your cactus somewhere it may receive sun in the morning and then shade in the afternoon to find the right balance.

There’s Inadequate Soil Drainage

Did you know that your cactus has a soil preference? They just can’t tell you!

Cacti thrive best in sandy or gravelly soil, and plant pots they sit in must have adequate drainage holes. If there is nowhere for overwatering to drain, the cactus will be left potted in a pool of water that badly affects the roots. The same result occurs if the cactus is potted in too absorbent soil.

So, to give your cactus gets all the help and nutrients it needs, ensure any pots have drainage holes, the soil isn’t too absorbent, and you fertilise it infrequently!
